Fundraise By Keeping Promises

stock-footage-pinky-promiseThe non-profit world struggled with their online fundraising efforts after the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral. Fundraisers thought it would be hard to come up with something similar that still had the same effect.  What it comes down to, though, is giving the community a way to share their personal promises and goals. A lot of people love taking on challenges and betting on things so why not bet for a cause you love?

Digital messaging has come a long way over the years and now almost everyone we know has a smart phone. One fundraising tool that has become popular in 2015 is Promise or Pay. It is a service that enables users to make a promise (to exercise at least 5 times a week, for example) or pay/donate to participating nonprofits.

Promise or Pay is effective by using two simple approaches to help people stick to their goals:

  1. Donating money to a charity if you don’t follow through
    • Many of us want to succeed at our goals but if it turns out that they are too difficult to reach giving to others helps take away some of the guilt and makes people still have something to feel good about.
  2. Encouraging others to donate if you succeed
    • People enjoy seeing their family and friends happy and successful. They might feel the urge to give after the achievement to show their care and support.

We all use some type of digital messaging and would love to brag about our successes. As a donor, having this option makes giving more fun and interactive between friends and family. It can keep you motivated and committed to your specific personal goals as well.
